Winters can feel long and grey here in Vancouver. Our hearts are yearning for light and we are dreaming of warmer days. Like us, the blossom trees simply cannot wait any longer and pop the first buds in tiny bursts of pink and white, willing spring to come. Growing up on our farm in northern Germany, my dad would open the windows of the stables as soon as the freezing winter winds let up a little to be sure not to lock out barn swallows as they returned from warmer lands. Each day we would glance up at the gaping source of cold in anticipation. Until finally the swallows would swoop in, announcing that spring had most assuredly arrived.
